Sochi 2014
The Winter Olympic Games are held in Russia for the first time. A total of 12 disciplines debute, including team figure skating, luge relay, biathlon mixed relay, women’s ski jumping, snowboarding and skiing slopestyle, skiing halfpipe, and snowboard parallel slalom. For the first time, women account for more than 40% of the participants.

PyeongChang 2018
As at the 1988 Seoul Games, the two Korean delegations parade together in the opening ceremony, waving a flag featuring a united Korea in blue on a white background. Italy stands out with three women’s gold medals, Sofia Goggia in the downhill, Michela Moioli in the snowboard cross, and flag bearer Arianna Fontana in the short track.

PyeongChang 2018 Paralympics
564 Paralympic athletes (431 men, 133 women) from 49 countries participate. The Russian delegation is banned due to an alleged state-sponsored doping case raised by WADA: the athletes compete as independents under the banner of the International Paralympic Committee. The United States of America wins the medals table, ahead of Canada and France.
Beijing 2022
Beijing is the first city to host both the winter and summer editions of the Olympic Games. This is the second Olympic Games held during the Covid-19 pandemic, following Tokyo 2020, with extremely strict protocols in place to maintain the health bubble set up for athletes and staff. Spectators are by invitation only.
